Cartoon Network HD launches in Southeast Asia with GlobeCast


Cartoon Network HD has become the first high-definition children's channel in Southeast Asia, after a deal with GlobeCast to deliver the channel via its capacity on the MEASAT-3 satellite.

GlobeCast is providing signal delivery from Cartoon Network in Hong Kong. The channel's feed is fibered to GlobeCast's Hong Kong teleport for uplink onto GlobeCast's multiplex on MEASAT-3 DVB-S2 platform.

Yew Weng Soo, Senior Vice President of Sales for GlobeCast Asia, said, "GlobeCast is proud to be the service provider for Cartoon Network HD, the first-of-its-kind HD programming for kids in Southeast Asia."

In joining GlobeCast's capacity on MEASAT-3, Cartoon Network HD now is part of a well-established HDTV broadcast neighborhood alongside channels such as History HD, Discovery HD, Food Network HD, Fashion One HD, and many more, reaching all key HD pay-TV platforms in Southeast Asia.

Sarang 107.8 FM wins second best programme award
 

Community Radio Sarang 107.8 FM won the second best programme award for promoting local culture, at first National Awards for Community Radios, in New Delhi. It is been awarded by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

This is the first time that the Ministry has instituted the awards to recognize and promote the best practices of community radios across the country.

The competition included categories such as Best Programmes in promoting local culture, adapting creative and innovative content practices, sustainability model, thematic programme, and community engagement sections.

Among the currently operationalised 130 community radio stations in India, Community Radio Sarang 107.8FM secured the award in the Best Programme in promoting local culture for its programme in Beary language.

Community Radio Sarang 107.8FM was launched in 2009 September by St Aloysius College, as its social outreach activity. It started broadcasting two hours a day, and gradually increased its broadcast.

Currently, Sarang 107.8FM broadcasts 24 hours a day, and is India’s only 24-hour community radio.

HRD Ministry to roll out 1,000 education channels
 

In a bid to boost the education sector, the Union Human Resources Development Ministry has planned to launch as many as 1,000 channels.

PTI has also reported that it has already initiated steps to launch the first 50 round-the-clock channels at the earliest and approached the Information and Broadcasting ministry for permission.

The HRD ministry has also started the process for appointing a consultant for setting up the infrastructure for the 50 Direct-To-Home (DTH) channels.

The country’s premier educational institutions have been asked to prepare lectures and educational material that can be telecast. Moreover, content for these channels is being prepared by premier educational institutes.

The HRD ministry initiated steps to launch the 50 channels after clearance of a major technological hurdle with the Department of Space assuring the use of two 36 MHz KU Band transponders in satellite GSAT 8 spacecraft for the channels.

The channels are a part of the National Mission of Education through Information and Communication Technology (NME-ICT) initiative.

“While the HRD ministry wanted to start the 50 channels at the earliest, the permission from the information and broadcasting ministry may take a little time as the latest guidelines specify that formation of a company is one of the requirements to start a channel,” a source said.
